dent in toyota sales, the company plans to spend more than a billion dollars to compensate owners. even if they don't own a toyota anymore. alison kosik has more. tell us about how this deal is going to pay out people who currently own toyotas and those who sold them. >> there are three parts to this. this is turning out to be one of the biggest lawsuits of its kind. it reinvolves around the sticky pedal issue. that's where some drivers said they experienced unintended acceleration. their gas pedals got stuck in floor mats. this settlement is going to cover about 16 million vehicles for 1998 to 2010 models. once a judge approves the settlement, current owners of the cars will get a brake override system installed as well as a customer care plan with a ten-year warranty on parts tied to the acceleration. another part will compensation current owners whose cars are not eligible for the system and a third and separate fund will go to all the former toyota owners who sold their cars but for reduced prices because of all the negative publicity surrounding these events. the settlement d

american automakers, ford, gm, both up. toyota was up. chrysler up, double digits again which was a surprise. the overseas automakers did better in december, largely. vw up 35%. honda was up double digits. so was hyundai. only one down on december of anyone was nissan. now take a look at year-end because this was the last month of the year so who did well year-end? again you look at american automakers but they did much better last year. the japanese obviously recovered better. toyota up 27% on the year. chrysler up 21%. they had a great year all the way around. honda was up. hyundai is up. everyone was up. it was a good year. i tell you we were on the conference calls today. mark reuss at gm saying he thinks next year will be even better. maybe 15 1/2 million selling rate. toyota says they will sell 100,000 more cars than they did last year. look at the stocks. gm and ford both largely up this year or today on trading and toyota not so much. what do you think was the best-selling car in the world? liz: i'm going to say, can i have two choices? >> no. david: just one. >> toyota coro

this rebound in car sales in the united states for toyota. gains coming from lexus and camry models. a lot of this may have to do with pent-up demand. during the recession and when gas prices have been very high, americans held back from buying more cars and more toyotas. but this is nothing new between gm and toyota. this has been a running theme with them. they've been neck and neck for years. toyota lost the top spot to gm in 2011. in part because of the earthquake and the tsunami in japan. now toyota is closer to reclaiming the title as the world's biggest carmaker. and this is really notable because toyota's had lots of problems, numerous recalls, it's paid millions of dollars in fines for safety recalls and safety issues. it even had a boycott by some chinese buyers over a territorial dispute. now it looks like its worldwide sales are expected to hit 9.7 million. and gm is a bit behind, on track to sell around 9.3 million cars around the world this year. interestingly enough, though, gm was really going strong for most of this year. and for some reason, as it approaches the fi
